Eligibility criteria
Before you start working on an application, please check the eligibility criteria to see whether the applicant and the application is eligible.
An applicant is eligible for Secondary Education Support, if they meet all of the following criteria:
An applicant is eligible for Higher Education Support , if they meet all of the following criteria:
An applicant is eligible for Income Generation Support, if they meet they meet all of the following criteria:
the applicant lives in (western) Kenya;
the applicant is between 14-25 years old;
the applicant has obtained the Kenyan Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) with
at least 250 marks out of 500 OR, if already in secondary school, has obtained at least a
C- in the last school year report; the applicant has or their parents/ caregivers have insufficient financial means to
attend and complete secondary education but are committed to contribute financially or
in-kind to the education of the applicant; the application includes a motivation letter for support;
the school of preference is officially registered as a government school;
the application includes at least one support letter from e.g. a school teacher or a
community leader; and the applicant does not qualify (fully) for bursary or sponsorship from the Kenyan
government.
the applicant lives in (western) Kenya;
the applicant is between 18-30 years old;
the applicant has obtained the Kenyan Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), passing the national exam with at least a C-; the applicant has or their parents/ caregivers have insufficient financial means to attend and complete higher education; but are committed to contribute financially or in-
kind to the contribution of the applicant;the application includes a motivation letter for support;
the school of preference is officially registered as a government school or is
accredited by the government;
the application includes at least one support letter from e.g. a school teacher or
community leader; the applicant does not qualify (fully) for bursaries and sponsorships from the Kenyan government; applicants need to demonstrate proof of application for HEF (Higher Education Funding by the Kenyan government (only applicable for University students);
Ya Juu Foundation does not cover outstanding tuition or fee arrears. Applications
from students with existing fee arrears will not be considered;Ya Juu Foundation will need to be granted access to the applicant’s student portal for
direct transfer of fees.
the group resides in (western) Kenya;
the majority of the group members are between 18-30 years old;
the group is active and registered with the Ministry of Social Services
the group has a constitution
the group has a written plan on how to generate income with identified activities, budget and planning with timeline;
the group has insufficient financial means to implement all their activities, including
capacity strengthening, and provide an overview of current funding sources, if any;the group has a joint M-Pesa/bank account for finances where at least two persons are responsible for financial transfers;
the application includes a motivation letter, a list of group members including gender, age and role, a report of past activities if applicable and written plan with objectives on how to generate income either through starting/boosting their business; and
the application includes at least one support / reference letter from e.g. a community leader or a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO).
Please make sure all eligibility criteria are checked and all requested documents are included before submitting an application. The submission of an application is not a guarantee that support will be provided: it is at the discretion of the Board of Ya Juu Foundation to approve or reject an application. In her consideration the Board will exercise all due care. Specific attention will be given to adolescents and young adults who face additional marginalization in society due to identity characteristics, such as having a disability. False statements or forged documents will lead to automatic disqualification. Ya Juu Foundation takes privacy and confidentiality seriously. Details of the application will only be discussed between the Board members. Ya Juu Foundation will not share personal details about an applicant without obtaining consent from the applicant.

Reporting requirements
If an applicant receives support, they commit to share:
1️⃣ a detailed report of the total expenditures, including receipts; and
2️⃣ a written report on how the financial support (a) has been spent and (b) has had an impact. Any other information is welcome in this report.
The quality of reporting will be taken into account when a follow-up application is submitted.
